Shhhh! I’m going to let you in on a bit of code.
This code is used only in snoburban PTA meetings, school hallways, and quaint coffee shops with sandwiches called Renoir and Monet. You are not allowed to talk about poor people. When referring to these people, you say, “the FARMs rate.” That is, “free and reduced meals,” also known as subsidized lunches. This is used when discussing how your elementary school did on standardized testing this year.

Even in Newsweek’s Top 100 High Schools annual report, there is a chart column devoted to “Subs. Lunch,” which is their code for “percentage of children who drag all of our scores down…”
